Description

The lively globular cluster M3 contains more than 200 variable stars. Many of them are RR Lyrae periodic variables, which are used for measuring distances, because they have a good correlation between period and luminosity.

I've processed calibrated images taken on the night from 7th to 8th March (it is an ongoing project) using the VaST [Variability Search Toolkit]. It found about 50 variable stars. Three of them are presented here:

NGC 5272 173

NGC 5272 181

NGC 5272 1308

They all have period about 12 hours and I was lucky to image during the brightening phase.

Revision A shows the three stars along with SIMBAD catalog annotations. The light curves (Revision B) obtained with VaST have a typical RR Lyrae shape. Revision C shows animation of 2 frames taken 2.5 hours apart. A few other variables are visible too.

It was fun to actually detect and see these short period variable stars.

Thanks for looking,

Vitali
