Description

The NGC 281 nebula ("Pacman Nebula") is a star formation site in the direction of the Cassiopeia constellation. It is possible to see in the image the IC 1590 open cluster (in the center), which formed only a few million years ago. The brightest star in this cluster is a binary system, whose energy ionizes the gas that makes up the nebula. The blue color corresponds to the emission of double-ionized oxygen and the color "orange" to the ionized sulfur. The dust zone to the right of the center probably hides stars in the process of forming. Bok globules against the brightest background of the nebula are also perfectly visible. The distance to NGC 281 is about 10,000 light years.
