Description

I love edge-on spiral galaxies. This object is an edge-on spiral located 200 million light years away in the constellation of Triangulum at a declination of +32 degrees. The magnitude 13.7 galaxy spans 3 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a large diameter of 180,000 light years.

NGC 973 has a dramatic dark dust lane running down the centerline of the galaxy. It looks like it has the classic peanut-shaped core.

The barred spiral galaxy below, IC 1815, is only 5 million light years further away than NGC 973. No arm structure is seen it its outer disk region.

A number of more distant edge-on galaxies are seen in the background.
