Description

This 21h HaRGB image of the star-forming region of M17 was captured at DeepSkyWest in Rio Hurtado, Chile in June-July 2021. The pink-to-red color comes from hydrogen gas clouds that are being excited by extremely hot newborn stars.  The M17 region is the brightest portion of a giant 40 light-year wide molecular cloud (GMC) that is the largest in the Milky Way.  It is located approximately 6,000 light-years away in the Sagittarius spiral arm which makes the isolated optically visible "Swan" portion of M17 roughly 15 light-years across.

Version D  is a rotated and cropped version of the original (previous versions):
It has North to the left and East toward the top and now I think I can finally see the  Swan in M17 floating on the water, which had escaped me in the uncropped versions that had North up.  You may have to stare at it a bit to see the head, eyes and beak on the graceful white neck of the swan as it floats toward us on the surface of the water with its raised wings behind it .  I am struck by its great beauty.
