Here we have my try at NGC 1055, a nearly edge on spiral in Cetus. This galaxy is a barred spiral with an approximate diameter of 115,800 lys. It is interacting with the large face on spiral M77, the two being separated by about 442,000 lys. These lie about 52 million lys away. Credit annesastronomynews.com. A very nice website indeed.

I like to try to find subjects that are not commonly imaged. This particular galaxy is however, quite frequently done along with M77, but not a ton of images of NGC1055 alone. There are some very fine examples of this done by Equinox, Jerry Macon, Warren Keller and SCObservatory, to name just a few and despite its small apparent angular size of 7.4 arc mins, I thought I’d give it a try.

This did prove to be somewhat difficult to process, particularly handling the several very bright stars and getting the color balanced in the way I wanted but in all, a very enjoyable project. I do like the classic “X” shaped halo around the galaxy characteristic of barred spirals.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
