Description

This object is a beautiful, rarely imaged barred spiral galaxy located 60 million light years away in the constellation of Fornax at a declination of -34 degrees. The galaxy spans 5 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 130,000 light years.

The arms of this galaxy are spiraled tightly around the core and form two oval rings, each with different brightnesses and different angles of major axis orientation. The slight blue tint in areas of the inner ring signify the presence of star clusters. Inside of this inner ring, the region immediately around the core has some subtle but interesting detail.

I usually like my galaxies to be a bit more disturbed but I find this one to be graceful and appealing. Most of the tiny faint stellar objects in the background are distant galaxies.
