Description

The galaxy NGC 5055 is a beautiful curly spiral galaxy in the constellation Canes Venatici. It carries a designation in the Messier catalogue, as M63 and is also known as the Sunflower Galaxy. 

In 1971 on May 25, a Type I supernova was detected in one of the spiral arms. The supernova reached a magnitude of 11.8 and was designated SN 1971.
