Description

NGC 300 is a spiral galaxy in the constellation Sculptor. More than 10 degrees lower and smaller in apparent size, it is overshadowed by its closer neighbor NGC 253.

Viewing NGC 300 reminds me of Messier 33, sometimes referred to as the Pinwheel Galaxy (as is M 101). Both are fairly low contrast, with widely spaced spiral arms and without prominent dust lanes. M 33 has a much larger apparent size and is much closer to Earth. At six million light years, NGC 300 is twice as far away as M 33 and believed to be slightly smaller than the Milky Way. Similar to M 33, this galaxy has several active hydrogen emission regions that glow red in this image. I think galaxies with prominent dust clouds and lanes make more interesting images, but the prominent hydrogen emission regions have a redeeming quality.
