Description

With the bushfires raging across my home state of NSW I have been obliged to remove my astronomy gear to a safer location. On the day I did so, the wind had change direction and brought thick smoke from the Palmer Oaky fire about 10kms away. Looking up at the gibbous moon against the afternoon/ evening sky it struck me just how golden in colour it was, whereas normally it would be white. Clearly the thick smoke was dispersing the blue light and giving me a yellow/ golden moon against the gorgeous blue of the sky. As Van McComas says, when the Moon is out, "shoot the moon" and I could not resist the opportunity.

I brought out my old Newtonian Reflector the C4.5 and hooked up my Canon EOS 5D mkII DSLR. I knew this combination would give a perfect Field of View (FOV). I took a bunch of shots and tried stacking them. But on reflection I decided that a single really good image was superior to the stacked and sharpened image. Aesthetically I thought it to be very pleasing and hope you agree.
