Description

This was my first ever astrophoto that I took and started the most enjoyable and frustrating hobby of my life. With all the excitement lately over Neowise I thought now was a good time to share this one. I took this back in 1996, when I was 16 years old. I still have the camera I took it with, the Canon AE-1. I believe I had ordinary ISO800 film, that was the most sensitive I could find with the limited resources I had at the time. I took it through a Tokina 28mm F2.8 lens, which is still on the camera. Obviously I had very little understanding about the Earths rotation and how to counter this motion, I did my best with what I had. I took this picture In Victoria BC on the beach at Esquimalt Lagoon. I only had one print of this comet in a frame and no negative so I thought I should digitize it and share for the history books.

I am proud of my first ever photo, I look at it now and see how much technology has advanced this hobby and made beautiful pictures possible. Its always good to see ones humble beginnings and reflect on your journey through the years and through again, the most enjoyable and frustrating hobby on Earth!

Would love comments and here any stories about others who witnessed the great comet of 1996. If you missed it in 1996, it will be back in 70,000 years, get ready!
