Description

NGC 2264 is the cone nebula and Christmas Tree Cluster, in the constellation Monoceros, just to the left of Orion, and 2,600 light years from Earth.
The Cone Nebula is an H II region. It was discovered by William Herschel on December 26, 1785. The Cone Nebula forms part of the nebulosity surrounding the Christmas Tree Cluster, a star formation consisting of young stars obscured by heavy layers of dust clouds. These dust clouds, along with hydrogen and helium are producing luminous new stars.
