Description

This Astrobin Debut Object is a superthin edge-on spiral galaxy located 70 million light years away in the constellation of Cetus at a declination of +2 degrees.  This magnitude 13 galaxy spans 4 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 80,000 light years.

I love these unusual superthin galaxies.  The formation mechanism for them is not well understood.  Like many superthin galaxies, UGC 711 has no central bulge.  The disk is relatively featureless except for the presence of a few blue star clusters.

The 10th magnitude orange star is BD+00 190.
