Description

Inspired by @derickson I decided to have a go at NGC2024/Barnard 33. The horsehead nebula has shown up, shyly in my shots of M42 but I haven't targeted it specifically before because I wasn't sure I could get it to come out of hiding. Given my focal length (200mm) I decided to frame up all of Orion's belt and see what happened.

In addition to the flame nebula (NGC2024) and the Horsehead Nebula (Barnard 33) as well as those beautiful stars that make up Orion's belt (Altinak, Alnilam, and Mintaka) there are a lot of interesting or neat DSO's in this field -- even if I can't quite bring them out.

In my uncropped subs, I've even got M78 (so maybe a new target even if it is very small in my FOV).

Neither my focus nor my tracking were good for this acquisition run and doing this in bortle 6/7 without filters is challenging so you'll see a lot of artifact from noise reduction that I wish wasn't there but so it goes. I'll probably continue to collect data on this target to see if I can improve the image but for now, I'm just pleased that I got the horsehead nebula to show up at all.

Edit: While I’m aware that I pushed noise reduction too hard (via Topaz Denoise AI), comments/feedback are welcome. If anyone one wants to take a shot at this data, PM and I’ll share the XISF file.
