Description

The Coma Cluster (Abell 1656)

The majority of objects in this image are galaxies averaging a distance of between 300-400 million years. The Coma Cluster (Abell 1656) located in Coma Berenices consists of about 1,000 large galaxies and 30,000 smaller ones. The brighest members are NGC4874 and NGC4889.

Coma Berenices also contains several Messier objects. The Globular Cluster M53 is located at a distance of about 58,000 light years from Earth.

The spiral galaxy M100 (NGC 4321) (one of the first spiral galaxies to be discovered) located at a distance of 55 million light years and with a magnitude of 10.1. Interestingly 5 supernova have been observed in M100.
