Description

This object is an emission nebula located 1500 light years away in the constellation of Cygnus at a declination of +44 degrees.

The prominent emission ridge is the Cygnus Wall, part of the larger emission nebula called The North America nebula because of its shape. The North America nebula is one of the largest nebula in the sky. The wall in this image spans the equivalent of two full moon widths. The wall has been sculpted by radiation from the region's young, hot, massive stars and is an area of active star formation.

My favorite parts of this image are the striking “mountaintops” of the Wall and the various levels of dark nebulosity throughout the central region of the image.
