Description

The Cone Nebula is part of the NGC2264 complex in Monoceros. The cold dark cone structure is backlit by the bright emission of ionized hydrogen while young hot blue stars from the Christmas Tree Cluster accent the field.

As this region is generally very bright, I assumed this would be a quick image with plenty of signal for processing. What I failed to consider, however, was the degree to which the cone itself is photon starved and in need of extra imaging time. Also, my SCT does not produce star spikes, but the finished image seemed conducive to some ethereal bling, so I added them in.

The cone is about 7 light-years long and 2700 light-years away from Earth (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cone_Nebula).

I hope you like the image!
