Description

This image of the Orion, Horsehead, and Flame nebulae was captured on the nights of December, 2020 using a medium telephoto lens, a dual narrowband filter, and a OSC DSLR. This is image includes the H-alpha data from the red channel. I picked up a cheap 200 mm Nikon lens to play around with capturing wider fields than I can with my APO refractor, and well, you get what you pay for. Lots of messy artifacts in these images, it gets pretty rough when you zoom in, but I like the detail when viewed at the full field of view. I could have improved the situation by closing down the aperture a few stops, but was greedy for photons this night and shot with it wide open...

Imaged with 200mm/F4 Nikon at F/4, STC Duo Narrowband Clip Filter, and full spectrum modified Nikon D5300.

Total integration time was ~2 hours using 21 subs at ISO400 x 240 sec and 24 subs at ISO400 x 60 sec. Pre-processed and integrated using PixInsight Batch Pre-Processing (BPP) script. Images calibrated using darks, bias, and flats. Cropped using dynamic crop and removed gradients using ABE. Combined 60s and 240s exposure images using HDR composition process. Extracted red/green/blue channels from HDR image using BatchChannelExtraction script.

R (Ha data) and Sum of G+B (OIII data) channels individually post-processed in Pixinsight: Cropped, gradient removal with ABE. Post-process using EZ Processing Suite for PixInsight: Denoise, Soft Stretch, HDR. Further processing using hdr multiscale transform, local histogram transformation and morphological transformation processes. Final noise reduction using DeNoise AI.
