Description

This object is a grand design barred spiral galaxy located 70 million light years away in the constellation of Eridanus at a declination of -19 degrees. The galaxy spans 6 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 120,000 light years. The galaxy disk is inclined 43 degrees from face-on.

There are so many features of this galaxy that I love. The tiny ring around the core, the long bar, the color contrast between the core and the arms, the faint thin dust lane inside of this bar, the brilliantly curling arms, the bright blue star clusters in the regions where the arms connect to the bar, the faint HII regions inside of the arms, and of course the lengthy star streams that fade off of the arms.
