NGC 281 oder auch der Pac-Man Nebel genannt, ist eine Sternentstehungsregion im Sternbild Kassiopeia. Der eingebettete offene Sternhaufen IC 1590, inklusive dem Mehrfachsternsystem HD 5005 als ionisierende Quelle, emmitiert die umgebenden Gase und bringt sie damit zum Aufleuchten. NGC281 ist somit als Emmisionsnebel einzustufen. Viele Nebelsäulen, sogenannte Bok-Globulen, prägen das Bild. Sie sind die Geburtsstätte neuer Sterne.

Die Aufnahme ist in der Hubble-Palette processiert. Hierfür habe ich die aufgenommenen Wellenlängen des Lichts von Schwefel dem Rotkanal zugeordnet, die Wellenlängen von Wasserstoff dem Grünkanal und die von ionisiertem Sauerstoff dem des Blaukanals zugeteilt. Zum Abbilden der Sterne habe ich extra Daten gesammelt in RGB um eine wahrhaftsgetreue Darstellung der Sterne zu gewährleisten.

Die Gesamtbelichtungszeit SHO + RGB ( Sterne) beträgt 28,5 Stunden.

NGC 281 or the Pac-Man Nebula is a star forming region in the constellation Cassiopeia. The embedded open star cluster IC 1590, including the multiple star system HD 5005 as ionizing source, emmits the surrounding gases and thus causes them to glow. NGC281 is thus to be classified as an emission nebula. Many nebular columns, so called Bok globules, characterize the image. They are the birthplace of new stars.

The image is processed in the Hubble palette. For this I assigned the recorded wavelengths of the light of sulfur to the red channel, the wavelengths of hydrogen to the green channel and those of ionized oxygen to the blue channel. For imaging the stars I collected extra data in RGB to ensure a true representation of the stars.

The total exposure time SHO + RGB (stars) is 28.5 hours.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.

If an image is dismissed 5 times, it's removed from the process. This streamlines the process and ensures that any bias present in promotions could be overruled by other staff members.
