Description

I originally tried to image this in 2015 when I first started doing astrophotography -- I saw it in the hand controller's catalog of my Celestron NexStar 8SE, and thought it sounded cool. I imaged something -- somehow the scope pointed closer to the North America Nebula and I got some of that instead -- and I've meant to come back to it ever since. It's best done under dark skies, so I put it late on my list for Okie-Tex, and did manage to capture a night on it before the end of the week!

The Cave Nebula itself is the object in the center of the image -- the more-familiar Bubble Nebula and nearby open cluster M52 are on the left side of the image, as well as lots of other goodies.

We're looking at a dusty region in the constellation Cepheus, which is located along the Milky Way after the big W of Cassiopeia, with the nebula itself being about halfway between the W and bright star Aldermarin. It's a diffuse nebula within the larger nebula complex you can see here. It's an active stellar nursery located about 2,400 lightyears from Earth.
