Description

This object is a rarely imaged planetary nebula located 4000 light years away in the constellation of Aquila at a declination of -3 degrees. The width in our apparent view is 1.5 arc-minutes which corresponds to a true diameter of 1.5 light years. All of these numbers are similar to the average PN dimensions. Like many PN, HII is strongest on the outside rim while OIII is strongest in the central area.

I find the structure of this PN to be unusual and interesting. The squarish shape and diffuse outside edges suggest that the PN may be strongly interacting with the ISM. The bluish central star is clearly visible and is surrounded by a pure blue circular region, in contrast to the cyan color which fills the majority of the interior. The HII and OIII appear to be mixing at the top and bottom of the central region to form a dull white color, leading to an appearance of a bluish band across the middle of the nebula.

Some have said that, in the eyepiece, this PN resembles the Owl Nebula because of the cyan areas left and right of the central star.
