NGC 55
A distância até essa galáxia irregular ainda é desconhecida. Estima-se que esteja a aproximadamente 7,5 milhões de anos-luz de distância.
Essa galáxia ainda é catalogada como estando no grupo de galáxias na constelação de Escultor, porém medidas recentes, indicam que tanto NGC 55 quanto NGC 300 estejam no primeiro plano e não no grupo em questão.
Além dessa questão controversa, NGC 55 é muito estudada por astrônomos por ser muito similar a Grande nuvem de Magalhães, uma galáxia satélite de nossa via láctea.
A parte central da galáxia é muito brilhante e com várias regiões de emissão, destacadas em cores avermelhadas, pode-se observar também várias regiões ricas em estrelas e clusters azuis jovens.
NGC 55
The distance to this irregular galaxy is still unknown. It is estimated to be approximately 7.5 million light years away.
This galaxy is still cataloged as being in the group of galaxies in the Sculptor constellation, but recent measurements indicate that both NGC 55 and NGC 300 are in the foreground rather than the group in question.
In addition to this controversial issue, NGC 55 is widely studied by astronomers because it is very similar to the Great Magellanic Cloud, a satellite galaxy of our Milky Way.
The central part of the galaxy is very bright and with several emission regions, highlighted in reddish colors, one can also observe several regions rich in stars and young blue clusters.
