I am enjoying imaging the atmosphere of Venus in its current apparition in our evening skies. The evening is not as good as the morning when it comes to the seeing, since the heat of the day is coming off the Earth, however, 15-20mins before sunset there is an inversion and the atmosphere stills for a while and the seeing can be surprisingly good. 
I am using my relatively new ASI 178MM camera to good effect. It is at least 4-5X more sensitive to UV than my trusty ASI 174MM and the very small pixels meant that I can get a decent image scale even at Prime Focus. I prefer to image at Prime Focus, because it minimises the amount of glass in the imaging train and glass attenuates UV transmission. I also removed the protection window in front of the sensor as it takes out half the spectrum that my Astrodon UVenus transmits. All in all I now have a much better configuration for Venus than I did previously. 
On the 28th of August, I had perhaps the best seeing of the apparition so far and it was really nice to see the beautiful detailed banding coming through especially in UV. However, the banding was also strong in Violet and even across the RGB filters. Finally the IR 850nm BP filter also showed structure. With all these data I went on to do two false colour images and a natural colour one.
The first, top left, is the classic IR(G)UV, convention, with IR as Red, a 50:50 IR:UV blends as Green and UV as Blue. At top right I produced a spectrum shifted BVUV version, with Blue mapped to Red, Violet to Green and again UV to Blue. Clearly, as you can see the UV tends to dominate and therefore produces a similar but by no means identical pattern. In both instances the good seeing has allowed quite a some detail. If nothing else the false colour images provide a beautiful aesthetically pleasing picture of the Venusian atmosphere. What was most interesting this time was the banding visible in natural colour (RGB). The patterns mirror to an extent those seen in false colour.
She is a beautiful planet.
