Description

My attempt at the Cocoon Nebula region. This is a combination reflection, absorption and emission nebula with the emission component being primarily being H-alpha and the reflection component being various wavelengths scattered by surrounding dust. This combination gives the nebula a pinkish hue versus the deeper red you would see in an H-alpha image alone. Within the nebula, you can see an open cluster which shares the IC 5146 designation with the nebula and is also known as Collinder 470. The star seen at the center of the Coccon is only about 100,000 years old. The dark structure seen to the right of the Cocoon is the dark nebula Barnard 168 - also an area of active star formation which would be evident if imaged in infra red light.

Due to weather and other constraints, this image was taken across five nights around the new moon in July.
