Getting in close to the moon … and closer still …

Two separate images with the C8 EHD of the singled out crater Posidonius at a smaller ROI (480p) compared to my previous post of the area of Lacus Somniorum, which covered more of the surrounding region. The first image with a Barlow 2x, the second one with 3x. With the seeing below optimal, the capturing duration limited by the slight scope drift (some deviance in the polar alignment and gusty winds), only about 15% stacked out of roughly 6000 frames

Because of the scope drift, some jagged edges to the frame, which I didn’t want to crop, as I wanted to preserve as much of the surrounding area as possible. The second image (B3x) is somewhat beyond the resolving power of the scope/focal length and suffers slightly in sharpness from the limited amount of frames that was captured.

But, in this second night out with my C8, I’m happy with this result …

Posidonius is a lunarimpact crater that is located on the north-eastern edge of Mare Serenitatis, to the south of Lacus Somniorum. It was named after ancient Greek philosopher and geographer Posidonius of Apamea. The crater Chacornac is attached to the southeast rim, and to the north is Daniell.

The rim of Posidonius is shallow and obscured, especially on the western edge, and the interior has been overlain by a lava flow in the past. The crater ramparts can still be observed to the south and east of the crater rim, and to a lesser degree to the north. There is a smaller, semi-circular rim of a concentric, flooded crater within the main rim, offset towards the eastern edge

Posidonius was a Greek philosopher, astronomer and mathematician. He followed the Stoic doctrine and attemped to estimate the size of the Sun and moon. (135 - 51 BC). Today, we understand Posidonius to be one of the greatest polymaths of his time.

Someone said of my previous image: “the jagged image appears the image to look like it was a page torn out of my favourite moon atlas” … A compliment I take with great pride, as it implies the image is reference textbook quality … I hope these images deserve the same compliment

Any constructive guidance is welcome

Clear Skies everybody! 🤩✨🔭
