Description

M65, M66 and NGC 3628 are part of a group of galaxies similar to our Local Group, although its components are in greater interaction with each other.

M65 (also known as NGC 3623) is a spiral galaxy discovered by Pierre Méchain in 1780, 22 million light years away from us and of apparent magnitude 9,3. Its spiral arms are crossed by a system of dark dust, in which very bright blue stars are evident in the high resolution images, a sign of a star formation. Its real diameter would be 70000 light years and its mass equal to 85 billion solar masses.

M66 (also known as NGC 3627) is a spiral galaxy discovered by Pierre Méchain in 1780 and is the brightest member of the Triplet with an apparent magnitude of 8,9. The galaxy is 35 million light years away from us and has a radius of about 50000 light years.

NGC 3628 (also known as the Hamburger Galaxy) is the least bright member of the Triplet but the largest, of apparent magnitude 10,4. It is an unbarred spiral galaxy about 35 million light years away from us discovered by William Herschel in 1784. Its most striking feature is the wide dark band of dust located along the outer edge of its spiral arms.
