Description

A wide-field, high-resolution image of the area around M81-M82

What is nice about a 47-million pixel image is that you can zoom in and look around.

I highlighted some of the other galaxies that are hiding in this field of view.

What is interesting (to me) is the span of distances to these little faint fuzzies.  The three "main" galaxies of the image, the well-known M81, M82 and NGC 3077, are approximately 12 to 13 million lightyears distant.  And in the same field of view, but nowhere close to these galaxies in reality, there are galaxies over 200 million light years away.

But the most interesting thing (to me), in the lower left corner, is a dwarf galaxy, very close to our own Milky Way, that is "only" 114,000 light years distant.  This is even closer than "our" (the Milky way's)  dwarf satellite galaxies, the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds, which are 160,000 lightyears away.
