Description

Messier 109 (also known as NGC 3992) is a barred spiral galaxy approximately 83.5 ± 24 million light-years away in the constellation Ursa Major. M109 can be seen southeast of the star Phecda (γ UMa). The spiral pattern in NGC 3992 is among the most regular known in the sky. Before it fragments, one of the two principal arms can be traced for nearly a complete revolution from its start near the end of the bar. Messier 109 was discovered by Pierre Méchain in 1781. In 1783 Charles Messier catalogued NGC 3992 as his 109th object.

Observation notes : M109 Pretty bright, large, elongated E-W with a very bright middle that becomes a bright nucleus at 135X.
