Description

As a result of the current Christmas Corona Lockdown, I dug into my negative film collection and found some Hyakutake images from 1996.

This is a stack of scans of six Ektapress 1600 ISO negative photo frames shot with a Pentax ME-Super and a SMC Pentax 50mm f/1.7 lens in the early morning of 27 March 1996 around 02:00UTC, I found the exact date and time by plate solving and comparing the image with a Guide9 simulation. The exposure times are unknown, and I don't know for sure if the camera was on a Superpolaris mount or just a tripod.

It looks like about 30 degrees of tail is visible in the image, but we could see about 60 degrees of tail with the naked eye, from Polaris into Coma Berenice. Still my most impressive comet sighting so far. It was moving very fast, in a telescope you could easily see it moving between the stars.

Version B shows a crude mosaic, showing a bit more tail and a hint of the disconnection event.

Description: mosaic of single frames, you can recognise the Big Dipper and Polaris near the head of the comet. There seems to be a disconnection event visible at the end of the tail.
