Description

This image captures a pair of galaxies 12 arc-minutes apart, both located in the southern constellation of Eridanus at a declination of -19 degrees. The two galaxies do not appear to be interacting with each other. This image looks strikingly similar to an image I posted a few days ago of a pair of nearby elliptical galaxies.

The left galaxy is NGC 1400, an 11 magnitude lenticular galaxy located 80 million light years away with a surface brightness of 13.0. It spans 3 arc-minutes, which corresponds to a diameter of 75,000 light years.

The right galaxy is NGC 1407, an higher magnitude (9.7) elliptical galaxy located 95 million light years away with a lower magnitude (13.4) surface brightness. It spans 7 arc-minutes, which corresponds to a large diameter of 185,000 light years.

As happens quite often in elliptical images, the most interesting feature here is a small galaxy in the background - the spiral galaxy, IC 343, to the lower right.
