This is my 3 panel mosaic of emission nebula IC 1396 including the famous Elephant Trunk Nebula located at the center right portion of the larger image. I also captured SII data but for this version I wanted to produce an image closer to the natural red color of the nebula while also pulling out the blue oxygen tone in IC 1396's interior. To accomplish this I first stretched the OIII data before adding it to the HII and used the "synthesize green channel" action from the Astronomy Tools action set in Photoshop.

IC 1396 is roughly 100 light years across and 2,400 light years from Earth. The nebula is being ionized by the triple star system HD 206267 which contains 3 giant blue stars 2 of which orbit each other every 3.7 days. It is this same triple star system that is illuminating and ionizing the surface of the dark extended cloud of gas and dust we call the Elephant Trunk Nebula. The 20 light year long Elephant Trunk is a site of active star (and likely planet) formation. Evidence of this can be seen in the head of the nebula where two young stars were formed and have begun clearing out the small cavity we see in the image.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status. This requirement, in addition to anonymization of images and distribution to only a subset of them, prevents biases and ensures that the best images are selected.

Early dismissal Staff members have a lot of images to inspect on a daily basis, and they can dismiss images if they believe they don't meet the requirements for IOTD/TP selection.
