Description

Although barely visible due to the sea of stars in this region of the milky way, Cederblad 122 is a large mag 10 diffuse nebula (HII region) about 1750 parsecs distant.

It can be seen more clearly in a few regions of the image, like the very center, where a particularly bright patch of the nebula shines strongly enough to overpower the stars nearby, and in the upper left corner, where a dark dust lane highlights it against the star background.

The gas is thought to be illuminated by HD 116796, a blue star near the bright patch (not the central one though), among other nearby stars.
