Description

THE PELICAN NEBULA
- IC5070
- Deep Sky 1500mm LRGBhA
- Constellation Cygnus

The Pelican Nebula, also known as IC 5070, is an emission nebula in the Cygnus constellation. It was named after the characteristic shape, reminiscent of a pelican. The nebula is part of a larger HII region where stars are actively being born.
It is about 2,000 light-years from Earth and covers an area of about 10 light-years. Composed mostly of ionized hydrogen gas, the nebula is made to glow by young, massive stars. These stars are part of an open star cluster located within the nebula known as the Pelican Star Cluster.
The striking shape of the Pelican Nebula is the result of the interaction of dust, gas and high-energy radiation. The pelican's head is obscured by dark dust that blocks the glow of ionized gas behind it. In the pelican's "wings", on the other hand, bright areas of emission can be seen, which are produced by hot gas and ionized elements such as oxygen and sulfur.
The Pelican Nebula is part of a larger star forming region called the North America Nebula (NGC 7000). The North America Nebula and the Pelican Nebula are separated by dark interstellar dust clouds that block the light behind them, forming the shape of a pelican and a North American continent.
