Description

Minkowski 2-51 is a rather interesting and unusual looking planetary nebula somewhat reminiscent in appearance to Abell 79.

At first glance, the progenitor star would seem to be a yellow star slightly offset from the center of the nebula. However, if you zoom in on the full scale image, you will see that there is in fact a faint blue star just above the brighter yellow star. There is no doubt that this is the star that actually created the nebula, as it has the characteristic blue color of a star nearing or reaching its final state as a white dwarf.

The each image in the stack of 2 images to create this view were themselves live-stacks of 301 two second exposures.
