Description

This object is a rarely imaged pair of tiny interacting galaxies located 200 million light years away in the constellation of Cancer at a declination of +25 degrees.

Without including the length of the magnificent star stream at the top, the large galaxy (NGC 2535) spans 2 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 120,000 light years. The star stream itself is longer than the galaxy, spanning 3 arc-minutes and 200,000 light years. In addition to the star stream, the many bright blue star clusters also draw my attention. The blue star clusters contrast with the yellowish core.

The small disturbed spiral galaxy is NGC 2536. A star stream bridge connects the two galaxies. These two galaxies were classified by Arp as "a spiral galaxy with a high surface brightness companion".
