Description

Had a few hours of clear skies on Sunday, thought it a good time to revisit the Seagull Nebula (Sh 2-292, 2-296) bordering Monoceros and Canis Major, a region approximately 3800 light years distant with many interesting objects. These include IC 2177 (the seagull's "head", an Ha emission region surrounding the massive Be class star HD 53367), the small reflection nebula NGC 2327 (in the "wing" to the right of image), and a bow shock waves visible in front of the runaway stars HD 53974 (blue, in the rightside wing) and HD 54662 (red, at the left 9 o'clock position). These fast moving stars are believed to be evidence of past supernova explosions that disrupted a loose association of stars and may have contributed to the formation of the entire Seagull region. HD 53974 has been determined to be moving at 31 km/s (69,300 mph) and HD 54662 is booking it at nearly 58 km/s (nearly 130,000 mph).
Hydrogen-alpha is red and is the most common element in the universe, so the overwhelming majority of emission nebulae are just...red. Gets old after a while. Using color masking, I've been working on increasing visual contrast, basically by converting luminosity gradients to chroma gradients. I think I like the result here, although "Seagull" is kind of uninspiring. I prefer to think of this as the "Giant Space Phoenix" nebula, with a nod to Marvel Comics :-D.
Imaged from outside of Las Vegas with the Tak FSQ-106N, Chroma 3nm HSO filters, ASI6200MM camera on a AP Mach2GTO mount.
9x900s Ha, 7x900s Oiii, 6x900s Sii. I do want to acquire more data to add to tamp the noise down more, but it's remarkable what the ASI6200 (Sony IMX455 sensor) can do with so few images.
