Description

Finally finishing off a new DSO. I started capturing this on April 19th, 2022. It's been a rough year thus far with clear skies here and poor seeing. The surface brightness is pretty faint. Even after all my exposure time, I really had to tease it out in processing the data.

Kohoutek 1-16 (K1-16, PK 94+27.1, PN G094.0+27.4) is a planetary nebula in the constellation Draco with a diameter of about 1.6 arcmin and is around 7,000 light year from Earth. The central star of this planetary nebula is a very hot (over 80,000 K) low amplitude pulsating variable star, known as DS Dra. The dominant pulsating period is 28.3 minutes with a semi-amplitude that is usually about 0.01 mag.

To the right of K1-16 near the nebula itself, is a bluish quasar KUV 18217+6419 and is one of the brightest objects of this type in the sky. The distance to the quasar is about 3.4 billion light years.
