Description

Sh2-129 / OU4 A Flying Bat with a Squid lurking in the deeps of the the (space)-ocean

Last year, climbing my way up the learning curve, I had my first boating trip to catch the Squid. Now with improved gear, and increased knowledge (or so I hope), I went on the search party again.

Frustrating as it was to train my second scope on this single object all through summer (maybe this is my excuse for being lazy in not searching for other objects), I did want to get a good result on this one … And I think I did … In part

The starLess Oiii-channel shows the squid quite nicely. Combining it in HOO and dropping the star field on the image, makes the squid hide away in the deeps of the (space)-ocean.

This being said about the squid, the flying bat on the other hand is flapping its wings quite firmly into the night sky …

Maybe I’m not over-joyed, but I’m happy … No more bats crowding my mind for the next months … until next year perhaps

Changing the exposure-time mid-game isn’t a good strategy. Although officially I have nearly 24 hours, it feels like it is limited to the 16 hours of the 180s exposures. Combining different exposures has its value for HDR images (PixInsight HDRComposition), where some parts are highly over/under exposed, but it doesn’t yield the desired result on a faint object. I switched back to the 180s exposure-time in the end. Although I kept the 7:50 of the 300s exposure in the count, in my opinion this is a basically a 16hour/180s image … which is still decent result to have caught the Squid … Any constructive guidance is welcome …

Clear Skies everybody! 🤩✨🔭
