Description

This object is a face-on ring galaxy located 80 million light years away in the constellation of Pegasus at a declination of +11 degrees.  It spans 2 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 50,000 light years.  This galaxy has been saddled with the unfortunate nickname of the Fried Egg Galaxy.

The star of the show here is the beautiful blue star-forming ring of stars around the central yellow core.  This ring is known as a nuclear ring and is believed to be the result of a past merger. My Astrobin collection of galaxies with nuclear rings is shown here.
