Description

This object is a rarely imaged colliding pair of galaxies located 350 million light years away in the constellation of Bootes at a declination of +8 degrees. The bright portion of the object spans 1 arc-minute in our apparent view, which corresponds to an actual width of 100,000 light years. The extended star streams on each side stretch this distance to an amazing 400,000 light years.

This object reminds me of the Antennae Galaxies, although this object is much smaller to our apparent view since it is 6 times further away. Two cores are clearly visible, along with a few dark dust bands winding close to the cores. I love the arcing star streams – the right stream is much fainter but longer and wider than the left stream.
