I tried to get a glimpse of the famous Asteroid (99942) APOPHIS (2004 MN4)

This Asteroid is currently again a hot candidate for crossing Earth's orbit and potentially hit Earth in the future (2029/2068).

Look at Wikipedia file for Apophis. Estimated size : 300m

It's a very faint target, but, luckily, was close to a faint galaxy : NGC 2979 12.7 mag.

( NGC2979 and Apophis fitted snuggly together in my CCD area)

In this image Apophis seems to be the faint streak/line to the left at 9 hour pos. at ca 20 mag.

I used Stellarium coordinates to find Apophis, which located it close to NGC 2979 last night.

Because of the Dobson alt/az mount , no guiding and bad seeing conditions,

I could only take 15sec. exposures.

P.S.

Sorry for the background, I did not take Flats. The session took 5 hours already and

I had to fight moonlight, 2° Celsius temp., high humidity and increasing ground fog

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
