Description

What you see is an emission nebula and a star-forming region located about 6,000 light-years from us. At the top right of the image is the open star cluster NGC 6823, a collection of newly formed stars that originate in the emission nebula. Most of the stars in this cluster are between 2 and 5 million years old. Within Sh2 86 (on a blue background) are a series of pillars, similar to those found in the Pillars of Creation in the Eagle Nebula. These pillars form when radiation from newly formed stars pushes gas and dust out of the nebula. Also shown in this image to the right of the main pillar are numerous Bok globules. These globules will eventually collapse to form new proto stars. This image explains very well "how" new stars are built. For the acquisition of the image I have used the 3 usual narrow band filters accumulating about 43 h of exposure.
