Description

Messier 78 (Casper the Friendly Ghost Nebula) is a reflection nebula in the constellation Orion. It lies about 1500 light-years from Earth. It is formed by the light from bright young energetic stars reflected and diffused by the material of the Orion molecular cloud from which they formed.

The red arrow shaped object in the lower left corner is HH-24, one of 17 Herbig-Haro objects in M78.  Herbig Haro objects are narrow jets of partially ionised material ejected by newborn stars as they accrete material from their surroundings.
