Description

This object, also known as K1-14 and PK 45+24.1, is a faint planetary nebula located 11,000 light years away in the constellation of Hercules at a declination of +21 degrees. This nebula spans 1 arc-minute in our apparent view, which corresponds to an actual diameter of 3 light years.

Like most obscure planetary nebulae, not much has been written about this object. It was discovered in 1963 by Lubos Kohoutek and was the 14th object in his first list of planetary nebula.

This is probably an older nebula because of its large size of 3 light years. The faint blue star near the center of the nebula is likely the progenitor star. It is a bit unusual that it is located off center – perhaps over time the ISM has influenced the movement of the nebula relative to this star. The nebula is primarily comprised of OIII but does have a fair amount of Ha signal as well.
