Description

The Crab Nebula is the remnant of a supernova widely seen on Earth in the year 1054. It was recorded by Chinese, Japanese, and Arab astronomers as being bright enough to see in daylight for 23 days and was visible in the night sky for 653 days. Native Americans likely saw and recorded it as well as some cave paintings appear to portray it. Located in the constellation Taurus approximately 6,500 light years from Earth, the nebula has a diameter of 11 light years and expands at a rate of about 1,500 kilometers per second. I took this picture on December 21, 2009 in Sharon, GA.
