Description

Bodes Galaxy (M81 / right) is a face on, spiral galaxy in the constellation of Ursa Major. The Cigar Galaxy (M82 / left) is an edge on, irregular starburst disk galaxy, also in Ursa Major. Both galaxies are approximately 12 million light-years away from Earth. M81 measures about 74,000 light-years in diameter, M82 measures about 38,000 light-years in diameter. The distance between the two galaxies is approximately 130,000 light-years.

M82 has had a very interesting past. If you look closely at the center of the object you’ll see a “red crease”. Some time ago M82 had a close encounter with M81. The gravitational impact from this encounter deformed M82, which caused star formation in the core to increase 10-fold. The encounter also left some scars in the spiral pattern of M81.
