Description

Two nights were dedicated to shooting the Orion nebula with my Canon 50 mm f/1.8 II lens. I wanted to include both the Angelfish Nebula (Sh2-264) and Barnard’s Loop in my final composition. That was just a little too tight for the field of view with my 4/3 sensor, so I planned a 2-panel mosaic.

Data from my first night (23 November 2021) was basically not usable because the Moon was too close to my target. The image below shows the effect from the nearby Moon in a single sub (left panel) and I was unable to get a good mosaic with such a massive gradient. I tried this target again on 25 December 2021, which was a Moonless night and that made a big difference (right panel).

I got surprised again by my neighbor’s rooftop. The field of view is so wide!! Starting the imaging session from this position would be no problem for my other telescopes.

The total exposure is only 12 x 300 sec per panel in H-alpha, I couldn’t get much more with the horizon restrictions around my backyard and the limited number of clear skies in winter.
