Description

It is a full moon now, so not many objects to image with an unmodded DSLR. Except open clusters! So I shot about two hours of data of the famous Double Cluster NGC 869 & NGC 884, with my achromatic refractor SW Stratravel 80 (80/400) and Canon 4000D. The trick to get nice stars with reduced chromatic aberration is to image the stars at f/10 (the lens cap on, but with the central opening open), and to image the background (the background - or the nebula, the galaxy, the dust lane, or whatever you want to image) at f/5. After registration both sets of subframes on the same reference frame, one can easily combine the stacks in GIMP, without the need of aligning them manually.
