Description

My new project is CTB-1, a supernova remnant. Considering the fact that it' s 10.000 light years away in combination with the fact that it takes up a diameter of around half a degree on our night sky (similar to the moon), lets me say "What a blast!!!". This explosion is 100 light years in size.

George Abell catalogued it as a planetary nebula, Abell 85, but it later became apparent that it's indeed a supernova remnant.

Rumors say, that a pulsar was created within the supernova and was ejected from the bubble at a 1000 km/s causing the rupture in the bubble that gives it it's descriptive name "The Popped Balloon Nebula"

Imaging this object turned out to be extremely challenging. There is so little light to capture. It will take me a longer time to complete this project. After many hours of capturing H-Alpha only, the basic shape slowly became visible.

After plenty of more time, more than 25 hours of data was captured. 6 nights over 2 weeks. And every night the fog came creeping in at some point. I didn't count the nights where I only got 1 or 2 10-minute subs pre-fog. I even drove up to a nearby mountain for one night to escape the fog, where I got most of my SII data. I decided to close this chapter for now. But might just revisit it another time, maybe with a faster scope, and maybe once more with improved post-processing skills.

In any case I learned a lot during this project. I improved my focus routine and guiding precision by a lot, 3d printed new parts, optimized my electronics, got a battery pack and became mobile, and learned plenty of new moves for post-processing.

How do you like the result of this endeavor?

P.S. I like how PK116 is photobombing my shot :-D
