Description

North America Nebula - NGC 7000

The North America Nebula, named after its resemblance to the continent of North America, is a large emission nebula located in the constellation Cygnus, at a distance of 1600 lightyears.

It's apparent size on the night sky is more than 4x that of the Moon.

A star forming region ~20 lightyears across, called the "Cygnus Wall", is located at the bottom of the image (the region that resembles the shape of Central America and Mexico). The dark regions of the image are caused by dust obscuring the emission of the nebula.
